Chapter I
"In the begining there was nothing, and it exploded. " - Terry Pratchett
In the beginning, as it is with all things in the beginning, there was not much in the place that would soon house the world that is known today. It was just cosmic dust. Floating. Waiting for a purpose, if a dust particle had the ability to actually wait. For all it's eons and eons of waiting for what seemed to be nothing, and at the end of the eons, something did in fact happen. Very quickly, too. You see, it all started, with a bang. One that shook the cosmos, as it gave birth to a new solar system. From it's remnants were born the immortal avatars of the elements.
Life, Death, Water, Earth, Fire, and Air.
Each perfect and complete in his or her own way. They were gifted with the ability to control their elements, to help shape the world on which they had been deposited. In the early centuries, that is what they did, maybe not with good cheer, but with a sense of pride and dignity. There was a problem, because, as you know, the world is a large place, spreading forever onward to the common traveler. Four of the avatars took a direction in which to spread their gifts, and curses, upon the planet. The two remaining avatars, Life and Death, wandered together, watching in Innocent awe, for everything is innocent in The Beginning, as the gift that life bestowed brought forth the creatures that we know today. As their travels continued, Death continued to suppress it's anger, and jealousy of it's fellow immortalis, Life. You see, though Death was there to destroy life of other creatures, to start the process over again, Death longed to create life, to breath the heart beat into the creatures. To watch them live for the first time.
One day, Death and Life were wandering through the direction held by the immortalis of Fire, content in their jobs. As the ball of flaming gas, the sun, set, Death spoke in a way that was not speaking at all, yet speaking at the same time. Death asked of Life for the chance to breath life into something. Life, however, was suspicious of Death. For Life had watched Death for the years they had traveled together, and Life feared for it's companion and had watched the anger and dispassion grow in the eyes of Death. Life denied Death's request, fearful of what could happen should Death be given life. It was not natural. Death, irritated by the denial, asked for a reason. Life told Death why. That it was not right. That should Death be given the power of Life, that there would be nothing for Life to do. Death would wield both, and Life would cease to be. Death, hurt and angered that Life would assume this, replied that it would not happen. Death could not take Life's mortal breath, for they had none. Again, Life denied Death the giving breath. Angered, now, Death demanded it of Life. Life, regretfully, denied the demand. Death, furious at the denied answers, gave Life an ultimatum. Give the power of Life to Death, or Death would take it by force. Life was appalled by the suggestion of it's companion. Death took a step forward, prepared to follow through, for lying had not yet come into being, ready to strike.
It was then that Fire, watching the argument progress, stepped in, the flames of the avatar searing Death, driving it away from Life. Death, fled, anger swelling within it's chosen form. It promised revenge on it's now estranged fellow avatars. Death would gain the power of Life, even if it was permanently. It did not take long for the word to spread to the three other avatars, each one shocked and appalled for a different reason. Each one, subtly, quietly, aligned themselves to protect or aid Life or Death. It was the end of the beginning. The New Age was dawning.
The avatars of the elements, Life, Death, Air, Water, and Fire, were just that. Avatars. Every appropriate life span for their form, they would shed it, and take another. The centuries that had passed since the disagreement, had passed in a blur for the elements, causing harsh feelings between the six, to grow and magnify to massive proportions. Water and Air sided with Death, while Fire and Earth sided with Life. As time passed, as it does well, Life continued it's job, bringing a heartbeat to the planet itself. Death, it it's spite, cut down everything Life created. Life, despairing at all the sadness that touched the world, called a peace between the immortals. A beseeching call. All came, bitter or not, to the sounder of the call. The truce was held, and a proposition laid at the feet of the avatars.
To keep them out from each others feet, there would be a time and place for all of them. It would keep the peace, and no more tears should be shed over the feeling. Life, would have the first set, which would later be called spring. Life would last through summer, and that is where Earth and Fire would join Life. From there it would travel into fall, in which Wind would rule, and then Winter, which would be shared by Water, Death, and Wind. It was agreed upon, abiet, reluctantly by Death, but agreed upon none the less. Life also stated, that while Death could not out right take a healthy living creature without reason, sickness and injury could come into it. Just as long as the living creature was given a chance to heal, as well. Another agreement was also struck at that meeting, brought up by Fire. All their abilities, their powers, could be used devastatingly, to hurt, kill, and maim other living creatures. They agreed that the powers would not be passed down to the mortal creatures. They could do horrid things with such abilities. Life, was wounded by this, for as much as Life was compassionate for it's children, Life had to admit, that they were rash, with great potential for destruction. It was agreed. They themselves, would keep their powers, for all time.
As time passed, in great arcs as it does for immortals, the mortals grew, and shrank, grew again, evolved, lived, loved, and died. Tragedies happened, miracles too. The life of the planet was going as it should. As it is, it was roughly two hundred years later that Death caught Earth's notice. Death was whispering into the ears of the young equines, when their dam's were not looking. Outraged, Earth went to Life, who's form was an old stallion at the time, and told the story. Life became enraged, and for once, sought out it's once comrade. Death was confronted by Life, and with a sneer upon it's lips, spoke to the angered Life about choice.Life, shocked out of anger, listened. The choice, the chance, to do good or evil. Higher thought. For, since the beginning, it had been nothing but sheep to tend, when it came to the mortals. Boredom, often gets to the best of us, and Life is no exception. Earth watched, as the two struck a deal, and then fled the glade to warn the other immortals of The Change.
In time, the immortals stepped into the wings of the stage of the planet, fading into the background, as lore and laws were forgotten or disregarded completely. The Change, as it had become known as, became the norm. Still, while it was once a solution, it became part of the problem. The alliances formed, three. The darks, the lights and the neutrals. Each alliance believing it the better and Superior, except for the neutrals, who'd rather keep out of the whole bloody mess. As the alliances grew in members, tempers flared, and threats were traded. Death, who could smell what was coming, yearned for the first blow to fall. Fall it did.
The great war, lasted for four years, actively. None were safe, not foals, not elders, not mares nor stallions. They decimated one another with a blood lust matched only by the sorrow of the ones left to live without their loved ones. The immortals, did nothing. Though it pained all, even callous Death, to watch the cold murders, they knew that their children must learn. It was just a pity that it took them so long to do so. Four long years passed, and the blood began to slow, to a gush, to a trickle, to a drop. The alliances were at a stand still. All on single, shattered legs, all tired and bruised, all weeping and wounded. A peace, was drawn, a tentative one, full of bad feeling and anticipation, but a peace none the less. The immortals watched the children bicker and fight among each other as they so often do, and while it makes some smile, others glower in the sooty shadows of yester year, waiting.
Death still wants it's share of life. As the avatars are reborn again, and again, and again, the longing, to do so, grows stronger and stronger with each remembrance. Life, grows and twines it's thoughts and alliances, building a shield for when the dam will break. It's coming. It's getting closer. Is you inner light bright enough to stand off the shadows? Ready or not, it's here.

Summary:
The six elements of the world, of Kaiya, are Air, Life, Death, Fire, and Earth. They survive through avatars, of the equine version, growing and learning again and again through the years. The disagreements between Life and Death have caused strife between the six of the elements, creating a divide between them. To try and sooth the friction, Life suggested the idea of seasons, each one having a chance to do as it was supposed to do.
When free will was introduced by Life and Death, the alliances formed not soon after, and years after that, a bloody war began. When the resources of the alliances were exhausted, the elements, began to step forward again, to help rebuild the world that had been devastated by war and suffering. Still, though they all prefer to to see the world in one piece, some, are willing to tear down everything and start again to get when they want. Hidden agendas, alliances and enemies are abound on Kaiya. The avatars, by no means Gods, but still powerful in their own way, are seeking to teach the mortals again. The chess game of a century is about to begin. Ready?
